Thank you, Glenys! I can confirm that this works in moodle 2, and that (as another commenter mentioned) if your install uses a salt, you have to temporarily remove it. It's very difficult to be clear, isn't it? Maybe the screenshot below of phpMyAdmin will help. I think Guillermo is saying the same thing in different words. Change the password in your profile to a very strong one.Log in to your Moodle site using the word "guest" (without the quotes) as the password.Click on the "Go" button at the bottom of the screen.Replace the "admin" password by the "guest" password.Change the username to whatever you want but not "admin" (on an online site because of security risk).

You can then log in and change the password. It is encrypted, but the default password for Guest is "guest".
